Brand brief — Anniversary Daily CVCDESIGN.md

DESIGN.md — Taiho Ventures, LLC (Anniversary Edition)

Per-style brand authority for src/styles/16-anniversary-daily-cvc/. Produced and maintained by columbus-design-md-builder. Read by columbus-design-author at scaffold time and by columbus-design-iterator on every refinement. Treat sections 1–7 as canonical truth.

1. Aesthetic Anchor

Primary family: Editorial Minimalism, mid-century American daily-newspaper variant — but pushed into decorative density rather than restraint. The site is staged as a 10th-anniversary print issue: Vol. X, No. 1, Menlo Park, May 2026. Secondary remix: Maximalist Magazine, restrained — decorative section dividers, illustrated drop caps, halftone dot processing on photography. Decoration is in service of period authenticity, not visual energy. Reference brands: 1960s NYT front page (the multi-deck masthead, the column rigor) × Hartford Courant / regional American dailies (the aged-cream paper, the cut-rules between columns) × Bookman / Cheltenham letterpress traditions (the ornamental dingbats, the spot-color highlight as letterpress accent). Visual atmosphere: Aged warm-cream newsprint paper, more yellowed than ivory. Ink-black serif type tiled across a 5-6 column grid in dense, asymmetric story blocks. Halftone-dot photography (no clean modern photos), illustrated drop caps on feature openers, decorative fleurons and double-rule section dividers, and Taiho Yellow used as a hand-tinted letterpress spot color the way old papers used a single chromatic highlight. The page is dense — the technical-associate audience that wants something to read gets something to read.

2. Brand Voice

Adjectives: Plain, factual, austere, weighted, retrospective. Voice anchor: Orwell — the tradesman / craftsman voice. Plain English to the point of austerity. Concrete nouns, active verbs, Saxon over Latinate. Long sentences when carrying real weight; short flat declaratives when the prose has earned a beat. Survives being tiled — twenty short dispatches sharing one register read as a newspaper, not a chorus. Full fingerprint in anti-slop-copy/references/voices.md. Voice sample:

In 2017, Taiho Ventures co-founded Cullinan Pearl with a small group of operators in Cambridge. The company had one asset, an EGFR inhibitor licensed out of Taiho Pharmaceutical's own pipeline, and a thesis about how to develop it for patients in the United States. Six years later, Taiho Pharmaceutical bought the company back. The asset is now in late-stage trials.

This is what the firm calls a build-to-buy. The phrase is plainer than the work: a strategic investor founds a company around a molecule, lets independent operators develop it under venture discipline, and re-acquires the asset once the science has been de-risked. Cullinan Pearl is the case the firm points to most often, because it ran the full loop. There are others. Most of the work, however, is more ordinary — a syndicate seat alongside ARCH or GV, a board observer chair, a quarterly check-in with a founder who is two clinical readouts away from knowing whether the molecule holds.

3. Color Palette & Roles

Mode: Light only. Aged newsprint cannot invert. Dominant: #F2EBD5 (--anniversary-paper) — aged yellow-cream newsprint background, the page field. Accent: #FABE00 (--anniversary-yellow) — Taiho Yellow used as a hand-tinted letterpress spot color: anniversary marks, "X YEARS" badges, behind illustrated drop caps as a tinted shape. Rare and intentional. Surfaces: #1A1413 (--anniversary-ink) — slightly warm black for body type, matched to aged paper; #8A532C (--anniversary-sepia) — Taiho Sepia for masthead lockup, illustrated initials, decorative fleurons; #E31B13 (--anniversary-red) — Taiho Red reserved for section dividers and dingbats, never body type or fills; #C7B584 (--anniversary-rule) — faded ink rule for cut-rules between columns; #EAE0C2 (--anniversary-paper-fold) — a fractionally darker paper tone for inset blocks. Notes: No gradients anywhere. Color is set in flat blocks the way a letterpress press sets ink. Yellow is the one highlight; Red is only in rules and dingbats; Sepia is only in masthead/decorative type. Body type is never colored.

4. Typography Rules

Headline font: DM Serif Display — https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=DM+Serif+Display:ital@0;1&display=swap — weights 400, italic 400. High-contrast Old-Style display for masthead and feature headlines. Body font: Crimson Pro — https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Crimson+Pro:ital,wght@0,400;0,600;0,700;1,400&display=swap — weights 400, 600, 700, italic 400. Old-Style serif for body, decks, and tiled story copy. Anniversary stamp / archival mark font: Special Elite — https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Special+Elite&display=swap — weight 400. Typewriter face used only for "filed" stamps, archival corner marks, and the dateline strip beneath the masthead. Pairing principle: High-contrast display serif (DM Serif Display) for the masthead and lede headlines + low-contrast Old-Style body serif (Crimson Pro) for everything else + a single typewriter face (Special Elite) used as a documentary stamp. Three families, three jobs, no overlap. Weight extremes: DM Serif Display naturally heavy; Crimson Pro 400 vs 700 for body emphasis. No light weights — period authenticity demands ink density. Size scale: Masthead 5.5rem, H1 (lede) 3.5rem, H2 (feature) 2.25rem, H3 (deck) 1.5rem, body 1.0625rem (17px), caption 0.875rem, dateline 0.75rem. Max font sizes per page: 3 (the body family carries multiple sizes; the rule is families, not sizes). Banned (do not use): Inter, Roboto, Open Sans, Lato, system stacks, Space Grotesk, geometric sans, Playfair Display (too modern-decorative), Lora (too gentle for newsprint), Merriweather (too web-default).

5. Layout & Density

Grid: 6-column traditional newspaper grid with cut-rules between every column. Asymmetric story blocks of 1–3 columns each. Stories jump (continued on a different "page" — i.e., further down the scroll). Multi-deck headlines (display headline + italic deck + flat-declarative subdeck) for feature stories. Container max-width: 1360px (newspaper feel — wider than a magazine, narrower than a SaaS landing). Section rhythm: Dense throughout. The page does not breathe; it tiles. Generous leading inside individual stories, but no whitespace between them — only cut-rules. Min container padding: 24px (mobile), 56px (desktop). Newspaper margins are tight. Asymmetry / overlap commitments: Stories of varying heights tile asymmetrically. An illustrated drop cap on a feature opener overlaps two lines of the body. Halftone-photo captions sometimes wrap around the photo into the column beneath. Decorative section dividers (fleurons, double-rules) sit centered between stories and announce a new register.

6. Atmosphere & Media

Hero treatment: Pattern + texture — the entire page is treated with an aged-paper grain (8–12% opacity warm noise). Above the fold is a masthead lockup, a multi-deck lede headline, and a tiled set of stories beneath, with the lede story occupying 3 columns. Atmospheric layers: Aged paper grain, halftone-dot photo processing (a CSS filter or pre-processed assets — every photograph reads as a printed halftone, not a clean digital image), illustrated drop caps on feature openers, decorative fleurons and double-rules between sections, occasional letterpress mis-registration on the Yellow spot color (a 1px Yellow offset behind a Sepia drop cap, simulating two-color press alignment drift). Shadow style: None. Newsprint does not shadow. Period. Media stance: Editorial photography processed as halftone — every photographic asset on the site (team headshots, lab interiors, partner portraits) is treated with halftone-dot processing to read as printed in 1965. Plus decorative ornaments (fleurons, dingbats, double-rules) used between stories. Stance reasoning: The anniversary edition conceit is the storytelling. Modern web layout, clean photos, or any motion would break the metaphor. The page wants to feel like a printed object that exists in a single moment in May 2026 — the anniversary issue.
