Brand brief — 28 Clay Syndicate (Taiho TOI)DESIGN.md

DESIGN.md — Taiho Ventures, LLC (Syndicate)

Per-style brand authority for src/styles/28-clay-syndicate-taiho-toi/. Produced and maintained by columbus-design-md-builder. Read by columbus-design-author at scaffold time and by columbus-design-iterator on every refinement. Treat sections 1–7 as canonical truth.

1. Aesthetic Anchor

Primary family: Warm Editorial — Clay/Pebble/Lora inherited from the upcoming Taiho Oncology US brand color system, the parent identity Menlo Park has been asked to extend. Secondary remix: Editorial Minimalism (Linear / Stripe lineage of disciplined typographic restraint) — used to keep the warmth from sliding into magazine-romantic territory. The remix is what differentiates a CVC site from an oncology-corporate one. Reference brands: Third Rock Ventures (typographic poise + restrained portfolio storytelling) × 5AM Ventures (premium biotech VC baseline; editorial-grade hero treatment) × SR One (pharma-heritage × agile-VC DNA — most direct strategic peer for Taiho's positioning) × MPM BioImpact (clinical-grade rigor on data surfaces, applied lightly here). Visual atmosphere: Premium and quietly confident. The page reads like a single thesis statement followed by the evidence — a fund's annual letter, not a marketing site. Pebble paper carries everything; Earth ink does the heavy lifting; Clay appears as structural rule-work; Ocean is the one moment of brand color where action happens. Generous negative space, but the page is never sparse — it's edited. The page is built for a PhD/MD associate scanning at 11pm and a partner reviewing it the next morning.

2. Brand Voice

Adjectives: declarative, evidence-first, disciplined, low-ego, biotech-fluent Voice anchor: Orwell — the craftsman voice (see anti-slop-copy/references/voices.md). Plain words, short sentences, weight on nouns and verbs. Reads as if every word was paid for. Voice sample:

A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus: 1. What am I trying to say? 2. What words will express it? 3. What image or idiom will make it clearer? 4. Is this image fresh enough to have an effect? — Politics and the English Language, George Orwell

Avoids:

Sample sentences:

Capital alone is not the value. The value is what sits on the cap table beside it: a global pharmaceutical company that has read the data, agrees with the science, and intends to be useful for a decade.

Taiho Ventures invests at preclinical through proof of concept. We syndicate alongside ARCH, GV, RA Capital, and others who do this work full-time. We bring a different thing — a patient balance sheet, a development organization, and a path into Asia.

3. Color Palette & Roles

Mode: light Dominant: #EFE5D8 (--clay-syndicate-pebble) — page canvas, every section, every card surface unless otherwise specified. The page reads as Pebble paper. Accent: #0E7B7A (--clay-syndicate-ocean) — links, active state, the single CTA color. This is the only place the brand spends color budget on action. Surfaces:

Deep-restricted accents (used at most once on a given page, never in headers/nav/footers):

Notes: No gradients anywhere. No mesh, no soft fades, no glow. Color is set in flat blocks, like a printed page. The Ocean accent is not a brand wash — it is a single working color that signals action.

4. Typography Rules

Headline font: Lora — https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Lora — weights 500, 600 (italic 400 for pull-quotes only) Body font: IBM Plex Sans — https://fonts.google.com/specimen/IBM+Plex+Sans — weights 400, 500, 600 Data font: IBM Plex Mono — https://fonts.google.com/specimen/IBM+Plex+Mono — weight 400 — for ticker chips, deal codes, dates, percentages, page numerals Pairing principle: High-contrast — warm humanist serif (Lora) against a clean grotesque sans (Plex Sans), with a mono cut from the same Plex family for data surfaces. Family coherence in the sans/mono pair makes the data look like it belongs to the same publication as the prose. Weight extremes: 400 body vs 600 display only. Never 500 for headlines, never 700. Size scale: H1 4.5rem (Lora 600), H2 2.25rem (Lora 500), H3 1.25rem (Plex Sans 600 caps tracking 0.08em), body 1.0625rem (Plex Sans 400 / 1.55 line-height), data 0.9375rem (Plex Mono 400), caption 0.8125rem (Plex Sans 400) Max font sizes per page: 3 Banned (do not use): Inter, Roboto, Open Sans, Lato, system stacks, Space Grotesk, Manrope, Geist, any geometric SaaS sans. No Playfair Display (the AI-default warm-editorial tell). No Source Serif. No Merriweather.

5. Layout & Density

Grid: 12-col with editorial pulls. Hero anchors a single mandate sentence in 8 cols; the right 4 cols carry an "EST 2016 · 10 yrs" marginalia stamp. Portfolio uses a 4-col responsive grid (4→2→1) of hairline-ruled cards. Case studies use 8-col body + 4-col right-gutter marginalia for syndicate co-investors, round context, and outcome. Team uses a 3-col grid of name + credentials block (no headshots until the detail page). Container max-width: 1280px Section rhythm: Varied, dense-then-airy. The hero breathes (full viewport, single statement). Mandate section is dense (mandate + three therapeutic-area stripes + investment-stage chip row). Portfolio is airy (cards with 32px internal padding, 24px gaps). Case studies are dense again (multi-column, marginalia hung). Team is airy. Outreach intake is dense (the form is the page). The page rhythm should feel like a partner walking you through the fund — pace varies by what's being shown. Min container padding: 24px mobile, 80px desktop, 120px on hero. Asymmetry / overlap commitments:

6. Atmosphere & Media

Hero treatment: Solid Pebble (#EFE5D8) — intentional. Premium VC pages do not need decoration; the typography is the design. Committed solid is the choice, not the default. Atmospheric layers: A subtle paper-grain texture at 6% opacity over the entire page (Pebble warming Pebble — barely visible, present on inspection). 1px Clay hairline rules between sections, full-bleed. No gridlines, no decorative SVGs, no halftones. Shadow style: Subtle — only on portfolio cards and case-study card surfaces. 1px Pebble-shade border + 4px / 4% Earth shadow on rest, lifting to 8% on hover. Nothing else gets a shadow. Media stance: mixed-media — declared with explicit per-context assignments below. Stance reasoning:
