DESIGN.md — Taiho Ventures (concept: editorial-minimal-press)

Per-style brand authority for src/styles/editorial-minimal-press/. Produced and maintained by columbus-design-md-builder. Read by columbus-design-author at scaffold time and by columbus-design-iterator on every refinement. Treat sections 1–7 as canonical truth.


1. Aesthetic Anchor

Primary family: Editorial Minimalism — disciplined typography, column-grid, generous gutters, type as the primary design element Secondary remix: Cult / Indie — editorial color blocks, courage in unexpected places, the willingness to feel a little weird in service of distinctiveness Reference brands: SR One (clinical UX + cool abstract scientific graphics; the "pharma heritage meets agile VC" execution) × MIT Press / Idea magazine (Japanese editorial restraint + typographic confidence; sumi-e brushstroke as accent) × A24 (warmth + indie courage; the willingness to look like itself rather than its category) Visual atmosphere: Reads like the annual report of a Japanese trading house, not a SaaS pitch. Cream-paper background, sepia ink for type, red brushstroke as punctuation, yellow used once per page maximum. Asymmetric column rules. Real data tables, not illustrative ones. Abstract scientific illustration in a flat sepia palette (gel-blot patterns, molecular silhouettes, microscopy abstracted) — never stock photography, never gradient meshes. The page should feel printed, archival, and quietly confident.

4. Typography Rules

Headline font: Fraunceshttps://fonts.google.com/specimen/Fraunces — variable axes (opsz 9–144, wght 100–900, SOFT 0–100, WONK 0–1). Use opsz 144 + SOFT 100 + WONK 1 at display sizes for editorial character. Weights used: 400, 600, 900. Body font: DM Sanshttps://fonts.google.com/specimen/DM+Sans — weights 400, 500, 700. Mono / data font: JetBrains Monohttps://fonts.google.com/specimen/JetBrains+Mono — weights 400, 500, 700. Used for data tables, captions, clinical labels, deal stats. The "built for PhDs" signal.

Pairing principle: Variable editorial serif (display) + warm humanist sans (body) + technical mono (data). Three-font system; each has a single, distinct job.

Weight extremes: Display Fraunces 900 next to body DM Sans 400 for the headline-to-paragraph drop. Mono in 500 for data; never bolded mono on cream.

Size scale (desktop):

Max font sizes per page: 4 distinct sizes maximum (H1 + H2/H3 + body + caption/mono). Don't introduce a fifth — collapse to an existing size.

Wordmark constraints (non-negotiable):

Banned (do not use): Inter, Roboto, Open Sans, Lato, system stacks, Space Grotesk, Poppins, Montserrat, Playfair Display, DM Serif Display, Helvetica Neue.

5. Layout & Density

Grid: 12-column with deliberate asymmetric breaks. Content typically sits in 7-of-12 with a 4-of-12 sidebar carrying captions, mono data, or pull quotes. Hero often runs 12-of-12 but with the H1 anchored to columns 2–8, leaving 9–12 for a brushstroke or data sidebar. Container max-width: 1280px content; full-bleed only for the inverted deep-sepia band and for the brushstroke gestures. Section rhythm: Dense-then-airy — a data/portfolio section followed by a single-quote-on-cream section, then back to dense. Don't run two airy sections back to back; the rhythm is what creates the editorial-magazine feel. Min container padding: 24px (mobile), 64px (desktop) Asymmetry / overlap commitments:

6. Backgrounds & Depth

Hero treatment: Solid --editorial-minimal-press-paper with a single oversized brushstroke graphic in --editorial-minimal-press-red set at low opacity (0.08–0.12) behind the H1. Brushstroke is SVG, hand-drawn feel (not a perfect rectangle, not a gradient), echoes the red stroke on the Taiho Communication Mark. No photography. No gradient. No mesh. Atmospheric layers:

The signature gesture: A hand-drawn red brushstroke (sumi-e energy, not a flat rectangle) appears as:

  1. An underline beneath each major H1 — sized to feel organic, never the full width of the headline
  2. A divider between major page bands — full-bleed, but with a hand-drawn end (frayed, not crisp)
  3. An accent on portfolio company callouts — a single short stroke beside a featured company name

This gesture is the design system's most distinctive element. It echoes the red brushstroke on the Taiho Communication Mark itself. Render as SVG paths, not images. Don't use Figma's "marker" stroke — too clean. Use a real hand-drawn SVG with irregular edges.

Concept positioning vs. siblings: This is concept #1 of N. Posture: distinctive-first — the brief explicitly named the homogeneity trap (Astellas, Ono, MRL all look the same), and the differentiated visual posture is the easier proof of differentiated thesis. Future concepts may take a more conservative-premium posture (e.g., charcoal/blue institutional) to triangulate.
