DESIGN.md — Taiho Ventures

Per-style brand authority for src/styles/soft-futurism-ventures/. Produced and maintained by columbus-design-md-builder. Read by columbus-design-author at scaffold time and by columbus-design-iterator on every refinement. Treat sections 1–7 as canonical truth.

1. Aesthetic Anchor

Primary family: Glass / Soft-Futurism (Apple / Arc / Granola lineage — frosted depth, cool atmospheric layers, soft elevation on premium light surfaces) Secondary remix: Cult / Indie (A24 / Letterboxd / Aesop lineage — restrained, scientifically grave, takes itself seriously without irony or warmth-padding) Reference brands: Apple (atmospheric depth, premium light surfaces, frosted glass) × A24 (cult-indie typography, restrained image direction) × Aesop (apothecary restraint, laboratory glass tonality, scientific-but-human gravitas) Visual atmosphere: Cool, light, atmospheric — but not consumer. The page reads like a quiet research instrument: frosted card surfaces float above pale ambient gradients, typography is a precise variable serif paired with a tabular sans, and figures are tabular by default. Confidence comes from restraint and named specifics, not from mood adjectives. The Menlo Park venture team has its own visual identity; the Taiho parent corporate marks (Sepia, Red, Yellow) appear only in attribution lockups.

2. Brand Voice

Adjectives: clinical, patient, dry, exact, quietly confident Says:

We back early-stage therapeutics in oncology, immunology, and urology — preclinical through proof of concept. We join syndicates led by ARCH, GV, and MPM. Our $400M is patient because Taiho is.

3. Color Palette & Roles

Mode: light primary, with selective dark hero moments (commit — not "supports both" as theme-toggle) Dominant: #F4F6F9 (--soft-futurism-ventures-paper) — pale cool stone page background, distinctly cooler than Apple's #FBFBFD, used for body and section surfaces Ink: #0E1525 (--soft-futurism-ventures-ink) — deep ink-blue body type and rules, never pure black Accent: #1F4D3B (--soft-futurism-ventures-pigment) — restrained spruce / laboratory-glass green, used sparingly for pull-quotes, single CTA chevron, masthead detail rules — never as a fill or large area Surfaces:

4. Typography Rules

Headline font: Newsreader (Production Type) — https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Newsreader — variable, weights 200–700 used; mostly 400 with selective 200 (display-large) and 600 (callouts) Body font: Instrument Sans (Instrument) — https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Instrument+Sans — weights 400, 500, 600 Tabular font: JetBrains Mono — https://fonts.google.com/specimen/JetBrains+Mono — weights 400, 500 — used only for tabular figures (portfolio data, fund sizes, trial phases, dates), never body Pairing principle: High-contrast — variable editorial serif against geometric sans, with mono used surgically for tabular numerals and trial-phase markers Weight extremes: 200 (Newsreader display-large) vs 600 (Instrument Sans body bold). Avoid 500 in display contexts. Size scale: H1 4rem, H2 2rem, H3 1.25rem, body 1rem, caption 0.8125rem Max font sizes per page: 3 Banned (do not use): Inter, Roboto, Open Sans, Lato, system stacks, Space Grotesk, Manrope, DM Sans, Plus Jakarta Sans, Poppins, Montserrat, Nunito, IBM Plex Sans, Source Sans

5. Layout & Density

Grid: Asymmetric 12-col with frequent breaks. Hero uses full-bleed atmospheric layer with anchored 7-col content card and 5-col right-margin marginalia (fund metadata: $400M · est. 2016 · Menlo Park · Sand Hill Rd). Portfolio uses dense data-table treatment with sortable columns (therapeutic area, stage, modality, co-investors, outcome). Team is gridded 4-col but staggered — odd cards offset by 1 row. Case studies are wide editorial 8/4 with marginalia. Container max-width: 1280px Section rhythm: varied — quiet → dense → quiet → dense. Hero is atmospheric and quiet; mandate strip is single-line dense (rules above and below); portfolio is data-dense with sortable headers and tabular figures; case studies breathe wide; team grid is staggered. Density signals seriousness; whitespace signals confidence. Min container padding: 24px (mobile), 64px (desktop) Asymmetry / overlap commitments: Hero content left-anchored, right-margin marginalia for fund metadata. Mandate strip is centered (the only centered element on the page). Portfolio header rules break the grid intentionally — column dividers extend full-bleed beyond the 1280px container into the gutters. Pull-quotes in case studies hang into the right gutter in pigment color.

6. Backgrounds & Depth

Hero treatment: Atmospheric — a soft cool gradient (pale stone #F4F6F9 → ice-blue #E8EEF6 → near-white #FAFBFD) layered with a low-opacity (8%) architectural photograph as silhouette. Architectural means Japanese atelier interiors, laboratory glassware as form (pipettes, beakers, lab benches photographed for shape and light, not for content), or modernist clinic / research facility light studies. Never literal molecule renders, DNA helices, microscope close-ups, or stock biotech imagery. Optional dark hero variant uses #0B1224 with single point-light gradient and same architectural-silhouette overlay at 6% opacity. Atmospheric layers:
